Volunteer: Help Support a Community Fridge!

Help reduce landfill waste and reduce hunger in our community by supporting a free community fridge!

Sign up to clean up the Freedge (community fridge) on Mondays and Thursdays! Spend about 30 minutes wiping down the inside of the fridge, taking the trash out and generally making the space welcoming and presentable to encourage folks to come get the free food. 

You do not need a vehicle to complete this shift, and all cleaning materials are provided.

Sustainable Connections’ Food Recovery Program fights food insecurity and climate change by rescuing nutritious surplus food and delivering it to neighbors in need. We’re looking for volunteers to help pick up food from local restaurants and transport it to hunger relief agencies.


What to expect:

-Flexible weekday shifts between 9:00 AM–4:00 PM

-Most shifts take just 30–60 minutes

-A simple, meaningful way to make an immediate impact


Volunteer responsibilities:

-Use your personal vehicle for pickups and drop-offs

-Lift and carry food trays (up to 25 lbs)

-Transport food safely using reusable containers we provide


Support & training:

We offer on-site training for your first shift, along with clear, step-by-step instructions for each pickup and drop-off location—so you’ll feel confident every step of the way.

Lions Camp Horizon is a summer camp for teens, adults, and seniors with disabilities! Every day, we have a different group of volunteers help serve our campers and staff breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Each meal has its own volunteer shift. It is a great time to help others and get to know some very fun people!

Volunteer: Birchwood Mobile Farmers Market Volunteer

The Twin Sisters Markets have been providing Whatcom County with locally grown produce since 2015.  We are a collaborative mobile farmers market, selling a variety of local farm products at three locations - Deming, Kendall, and the Birchwood neighborhood of Bellingham. 

This 2023 season, we are seeking a few Birchwood market volunteers to support our mission - to provide fresh local food in underserved areas of Whatcom County. The Birchwood market sets up in the Liberty Tax/NW Pawn parking lot and runs from 9am to 2pm June through October. Volunteers help with set up and take down, customer service, and other tasks to support market staff. 

 

PERKS: Free produce from what is leftover at the end of each market shift (does not include meat, honey, dairy, eggs, or other value-added items), 10% discount on all items, and market swag
