Fostering takes time and effort but the rewards are tremendous. Fostering can be an ideal way to enjoy the companionship of a dog or cat while waiting for” the right one” to come along! We pay the food, veterinary and other expenses; you provide the TLC.

The Alternative Humane Society will do everything possible to make the right match for both the foster home and the animal that we have rescued. Agreeing to foster an animal means taking on a big responsibility. We try to ensure that everyone in your household realizes this. We interview prospective foster families to ensure they can provide both the required daily care and also give lots of love! Before placing an animal into your care, we also conduct a house visit and discuss any special needs that the animal may have.

We pay for medical care, and any other special costs, that an animal may require while in a foster home.

Alternative Humane Society needs Case Managers in various Bellingham and Whatcom County neighborhoods. The job of the case manager is to find the perfect match for each dog he or she is case managing. You will work with various foster homes keeping an open line of communication to ensure the dog is progressing socially and getting up to date on all vaccinations and medical care at our pre-chosen vet clinics, as well as up to date training and daily exercise. You will write an enticing Petfinder.com and Adoptapet.com bio and take flattering pictures of the dog with the help of the dogs' foster parents. You will ensure the dogs' traits and needs are met and that the dog is adopted into a home that is a perfect match for each individual case. You will respond to each applicant whether it be a match or not and set up meet n greets with good candidates. You will abide by Alternative Humane Society policies and procedures to rehome various dogs in need. You will supply foster homes with various supplies, treats, food, etc. provided by the organization. Majority of duties can be completed via email. Occasional transport and presence at events is required. Saving the lives of dogs is a very rewarding volunteer job and you will continue to gain knowledge and create bonds throughout your volunteer time with AHS.

Help give maximum exposure to our adoptable dogs by ensuring we are in attendance to the various community events.

Communicate with board of directors to make decisions on which events we will do. Be the point of contact for registering AHS to events (email and phone calls) Keep a calendar of all upcoming events Decide or identify who will be the Event Coordinator for a particular event (event manager does not need to be at each event!) Notify volunteer coordinator of event calendar and needs (number of volunteers, number of dogs, etc.) Make assignment list for event coordinator of the event Make a list of dogs attending for check in/check out purposes

 

The following would be assigned to the event coordinator for each event:

Gather all things together and organize for event. This involves going to storage. Also, needs may change with different events; sometimes we need the tent or portable table. Ensure everything goes back into the proper containers or assign someone to do this.

We need your help!  The Alternative Humane Society relies on the efforts of fund-raising, adoptions and donations to keep helping the animals of Whatcom County.  If you have experience with fundraising, we’d love to hear from you!  Leading a team of dedicated volunteers in planning and implementing fundraising events, and an annual community outreach would your main objective.

Can you write grants? Can you help us obtain the funds to support our needed programs? For over 30 years the Alternative Humane Society has survived based on our fund-raising, adoptions, and donations. We have two great needs that we cannot manage to underwrite on our own: preventing unwanted dog and cat births through spay/neuter assistance and vet bills for the dogs that come to us with severe health issues. We have already saved thousands of animals, educated and supported the community, but it is not enough. With proper funding, we can help to break the cycle of unwanted pet births. We know the funding is there, we need someone with the skills to help us obtain it.

Experience researching grant opportunities. The ability to make initial contacts with grantors; organized and able to follow instructions carefully; skills at writing proposals; persuasive--effective and fluent use of language; willingness to follow through with grant completion activities; able to manage deadlines; ability to pull together information from various sources.
