The Bellingham United Speech and Debate team are engaged in the sport of disagreement known as interscholastic debate. The team participates in tournaments throughout Washington and Oregon.
Speech and debate promote critical thinking skills. Being able to understand information and determine its accuracy is key to making informed decisions – about your life, your future and your country. High school debaters form an opinionated, thoughtful, inclusive and friendly intellectual world-wide community. It also enhances college admissions applications and can lead to scholarships.
Bellingham's Unified Speech and Debate team are seeking volunteers to help with coaching, judging, fund-raising and publicity. While previous involvement in high school or college debate is a plus, it’s not required. If you are actively interested in and engaged in current events, like high school kids and are patient, outgoing and flexible, this is a great way to help develop our team.
The team meets 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the following locations:
- Mondays at Bellingham High School / room 304
- Tuesdays at Sehome High School / library
- Wednesdays at Squalicum High School / library
