The Volunteer Fund Developer plays a vital role in supporting the mission of Whatcom Family & Community Network by assisting in the planning, execution, and evaluation of fundraising campaigns and donor engagement strategies. This position helps cultivate donor relationships, identify funding opportunities, and enhance the organization’s financial sustainability through individual and community support.

Key Responsibilities · Assist in the development and implementation of fundraising campaigns and events (both virtual and in-person). · Research and identify potential donors, sponsors, and grant opportunities. · Draft donor communications, appeals, thank-you letters, and impact reports. · Collaborate with staff to ensure donor stewardship and timely follow-up. · Support outreach efforts to engage new supporters via social media, email, and community events, including business sponsorship for annual events. · Attend and represent the organization at fundraising events and networking opportunities. · Provide administrative support to the Development team as needed. · Attend relevant trainings, as available. --- Qualifications · Passion for the mission of Whatcom Family & Community Network. · Excellent written and verbal communication skills. · Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. · Ability to work independently and as part of a team. · Experience with fundraising, development, marketing, or customer service is a plus. · Familiarity with donor databases (e.g., Flipcause) is a plus but not required. --- Time Commitment · Minimum of 20 hours per month, flexible schedule. · Occasional evening or weekend availability for events. --- Benefits: · Gain experience in nonprofit fundraising and donor development. · Networking opportunities within the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors · Letter of recommendation and resume support upon successful completion. · Opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community.

We have a pile of donations to sort through, and we can use all the hands we can get! Once sorted our donation go down to our Community Resource Center, where all members of the community are welcome to shop for free, whether it be clothing, blankets, sheets, or a multitude of other household goods. You'll be helping us keep our shelves stocked, ensuring that no one in our community has to go without. Anyone who wants to join is welcome, bring your friends and family along, too!!

Volunteer at the Severe Weather Shelter in Downtown Bellingham!

In response to our community’s homelessness crisis and the coming winter season, the Whatcom Volunteer Center is recruiting volunteers for Bellingham’s Severe Weather Shelter. Volunteers will have a chance to help keep unhoused neighbors safe and warm during dangerously cold weather. 

The temporary shelter will open when overnight temperatures are forecasted to fall to 32 degrees in Bellingham. The shelter will be available to open, dependent on weather, from late November through March 2025. Notification of the Severe Weather Shelter activation will be given 48 hours or more in advance.  

Volunteers will be helping people in need by serving hot meals, distributing bedding and supplies, and helping to keep the shelter space organized and welcoming. Volunteers will also support periodic trash pickup in the area surrounding the facility.

Interested in telling audio stories? Want to bring local communities, issues, news, or music to the airwaves?

KMRE wants people who are interested in local media and believe in the power of community radios. Producers are responsible for creating an outline for the story they are telling, coordinating recording sessions, and editing the recordings into a final product. Producers work in the KMRE studios, as well as out in the community. Producers are assigned stories, and also pitch their own ideas.

This position requires the ability to listen and communicate well and use recording, sound board and editing equipment and programs. No previous experience required! We exist to train and educate as well as bring community voices and sounds to life.

Home studio producers/podcasts are welcome to propose a program.

KMRE is a non-commercial, community operated radio station. The station's programming features local news in addition to roots music, conversational and educational programs, and arts & culture.
Our local news is "by our community, for our community". Local people gather, write, and announce the news. There are opportunities for news writers, field reporters, and announcers.
Experience with print or broadcast journalism is helpful, but not required. Other station volunteers can provide training. If you have the desire to help shine a light on local news and create a more informed community, come join us.

Volunteer graphic designer will help the station by designing digital and print assets to promote KMRE, encourage listenership, and increase underwriting. Materials may include individual posters, postcards for shows, web graphics, an annual report with a dashboard, custom icons and a limited edition t-shirt graphics for the benefit of the station. Works directly with the General Manager and the Program Director. Hours are flexible, and work is remote. 

KMRE is expanding our signal and we're seeking a professional, experienced Grant Writer, who is primarily responsible for developing and writing grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making organizations and will persuasively communicate our mission and programs to potential funders. The Grant Writer researches, writes, and prepares government, foundation, and corporate grant proposals and reports that align with KMRE's mission.

Research, write, and submit compelling and timely letters of inquiry and grant proposals to foundations, corporations, and government entities.

Are you a native or near-native level Spanish speaker? We are looking for one or two people to transcribe KMRE Daily News stories into a once-weekly Spanish language program. The Producer/Reader will select from existing stories, translate them to Spanish, and then read the stories for air once a week.

Celebrate Make A Difference Day and Arbor Day with the City of Bellingham and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) as we care for Whatcom Falls Park! Together, we will plant native trees and shrubs and remove invasive weeds along Whatcom Creek to improve water quality, recover downstream salmon habitat, and restore our forests for wildlife.  

All ages, abilities, and experience levels welcome. Unaccompanied youth under age 18 must provide a City & NSEA Youth Liability Release Form signed by their legal guardian. Participants under age 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. This event will conclude with some brief closing remarks and free pizza. We will also be giving away free tree saplings to participants in celebration of Arbor Day!

You need: Weather-appropriate clothing, long pants, closed-toe shoes, and a full water bottle.

We provide: Tools, gloves, instruction, and light refreshments, including free Tony’s coffee and free pizza from Pizza Time and Zeeks Pizza, all generously donated for this event. You can also take a free tree sapling home with you.

We are looking for civic clubs, businesses, churches, or simply groups of friends, neighbors, families, or individuals who will come together and commit to preparing and delivering a healthy meal to Gardenview Village's 30-40 guests. You have the power to decide how frequently you can commit—one time only, weekly, or monthly—whichever best fits your schedule. We especially need meal deliveries towards the end of the month.

Kitchen facilities in Gardenview Village are limited, so food must be prepared offsite and delivered. Road2Home volunteers often foster personal connections with the folks we serve. By providing each Gardenview Village guest with healthy meals, positive interactions, and encouragement, you can make a significant difference in their lives.  

Through Road2Home's work, meaningful relationships are built, and hope for better futures is created.

Do you have good driving skills and some time to serve others?  We need you.

Gardenview Village occasionally needs volunteers to transport guests to appointments, the grocery store, and other necessary locations. We would like to have a list of trained and dedicated volunteers with whom we can coordinate scheduling ahead of time to ensure dependable transportation to appointments is available when needed.   

This volunteer opportunity can be scheduled based on your available frequency.  We welcome daily, weekly, or monthly transporters' commitments.  Along with providing transportation to our guests, this experience offers the opportunity to form a positive connection and the potential for relationship building.  

The Gardenview Village van will be available for the transporters to drive, but for insurance purposes, it requires the following to be on file for each driver:

Approved background check (Road2Home will do this)
Driver's Abstract Report (Volunteer requests this and provides a copy to Road2Home.  Road2Home will reimburse volunteers for the $15 fee associated with this report.

Are you handy to have around? Do you love to fix, replace, or repair? Gardenview Village needs you!

Volunteers should be experienced in general maintenance in the area where they specialize. They will be asked to assess a problem and suggest a good solution to remedy a the issue. They will communicate and coordinate with the Gardenview Village staff about the issue/resolution and resources necessary to move forward with repairs.

Do you have three hours weekly to commit to a regular shift at Gardenview Village? While there, you will help our staff take care of the requests and needs of the village's guests.  You may also be asked to help complete daily routine tasks such as watering plants, stocking bathroom and kitchen supplies, etc.... 

This position will allow you to meet many wonderful people from our community who also volunteer in different capacities and donors who drop by with in-kind gifts to share with the guests we serve. You will also build meaningful relationships with the folks served in Road2Home's programs and services.

We're looking for people who can commit to one afternoon a week from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. or 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.  If you are willing, you could commit to one six-hour afternoon from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.  You tell us the day you will be consistently available, and we will put you in that timeslot on the master schedule.

Do you enjoy creating a plan and watching it all come together? The Road2Home Fundraising and Events Committee welcomes your participation.   As a nonprofit organization, we work hard to raise funds to support our programs and services.  Everyone on the committee utilizes their skills, talents, and experience to plan, prepare, promote, organize, and host the fundraising activity.

As an ally, you'll provide companionship, connect clients with resources, serve as a liaison with their case manager, and help them achieve their goals. The best part is that you can do all this at a pace that suits you and your partner-participant. Our primary focus is on fostering connection and building a trusting relationship. 

Depending on what you prefer and what you're available, you may be paired with a guest at the Gardenview Village tiny homes or an individual in the community.

Being an ally is not just a volunteer role; it's an opportunity to make a significant difference in someone's life. Road2Home provides a community of fellow allies to learn from and connect with. We also offer in-depth training for allies, which covers trauma-informed care, creating boundaries, strategies to help clients realize their goals, local resources, and more. This comprehensive support ensures you feel prepared and confident in your role as an ally, ready to make a positive impact.

Being an ally requires a six-month commitment, during which you meet with a client in person twice a month and are available for phone calls or texts.

To help ensure a successful Ally experience, you must complete a Road2Home volunteer training class and an Ally orientation before being assigned a program partner. These sessions are designed to introduce our work, enrich your understanding of homelessness in our community, and help ensure a rewarding volunteer experience. You will also have access to our experienced staff trained in trauma-informed principles to guide you. We want your Ally Program experience to be rewarding for you and your partner!

Volunteer to become a Roots of Empathy Instructor!

Do you love working with children? Are you a good listener and want to help children have better relationships, friendships, and mental health? Maybe you are an aspiring teacher and would like to gain classroom experience? Or you plan to go into a Mental Health field and are seeking an opportunity to practice your skills?

We are recruiting volunteers to become Roots of Empathy Instructors. As an Instructor, you will help us achieve our mission to "Change the world, child by child.

What We Do:

The Roots of Empathy program is delivered to elementary school children who are coached to recognize and connect with the vulnerability and humanity of a baby who visits their classroom throughout the school year with their parent(s), along with a trained Roots of Empathy Instructor using a specialized curriculum. Throughout the year children learn the skills behind emotional intelligence and how to apply them in order to better understand themselves and their classmates. Participation in a Roots of Empathy program has shown to reduce bullying and increase social skills like empathy, sharing and helping.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for fun opportunities at our Visitor Information Centers throughout the county! Share your passion about where you live through helping tourists, locals, and the community members of Whatcom County.

At Bellingham | Whatcom County Tourism, our mission is to improve the local economy by attracting visitors to stay longer. We are looking for volunteer Tourism Ambassadors to engage with people at our visitor information centers in Bellingham.

Volunteers must be familiar with Whatcom County attractions (or have an eagerness to learn), be able to investigate and provide clear directions, and handle multiple tasks at one time. Strong communication and customer service skills are essential, as well as having a positive and friendly attitude.

We are asking that volunteers commit to one shift per week, for a minimum of three months. Shifts are 3-4 hours. If you are interested, but have more questions about availability, please reach out.

Benefits to joining our team: trips to learn about area attractions, hotels, and outdoor adventures. We also have volunteer appreciation parties and provide snacks during shifts. As the weather turns, Ferndale Community Services is gearing up to open our Severe Weather Shelter from November through March. We're on the lookout for dedicated volunteers to help us provide a safe, warm, and welcoming space for our unhoused neighbors on the coldest nights of the year.

You'll be the friendly face that greets our guests, helping with everything from setup and check-in to just being a supportive presence. We have flexible 4-hour shifts available between 4:30 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. It’s not always glamorous work, but it’s incredibly meaningful, and it makes a direct impact right here in our community.

No prior experience? No problem! What we're really looking for are compassionate and reliable people. We provide all the necessary training, including an on-site orientation and valuable de-escalation skills, to make sure you're confident and prepared.

Seeking volunteer digital navigator to work with seniors living at Woodrose Apartments (Bellingham WA). Ideal candidate will have good customer service skills and some basic technical skills. Training and support provided by CIRC. Please reach out if you have any questions. 

Title: Digital Navigator

Reports to: The Digital Navigator will report to CIRC Program Manager of Health & Technology Initiatives (Amber Cunningham)

Job Overview: The Digital Navigator provides individualized or small group assistance to

older adults living in affordable housing that need affordable home internet service, affordable internet-capable devices, and/or coaching in introductory digital skills to become effective home internet users.  Assistance is provided primarily in person but may also include email and other communication methods.

The Digital Navigator’s work is part of CIRC’s efforts to provide equitable internet access and technology education for residents. The Digital Navigator is a part-time position, ideally lasting 6 months with a 4 hour a week commitment.

Responsibilities and Duties

● Receive, return, or initiate telephone contact with residents seeking assistance or

identified by CIRC.

● Discuss with each resident their home internet access/need for home internet

access, technology experiences and their devices.

● Assess the resident’s access to technology, current digital skill level pertaining to what they

need to accomplish the plan, connectivity needs, and internet use priorities. Set

agreed goals for Digital Navigator services. Confirm the details with the resident.

● If necessary, advise residents about free or affordable home internet service options

for which they may qualify, assist them in applying for services they choose, and

support their efforts to secure the service.

● If necessary, advise residents about sources of affordable computers or other internet

connected devices for which they may qualify, and support their efforts to acquire

appropriate devices and where they can get help for repair.

● Coach residents as necessary to use their home internet services to meet

their internet use priorities. This may include referral to sources of additional digital literacy skill training.

● Track each resident’s progress and types of requests, keep accurate and timely

records, and report outcomes as required.

● Plan and manage ongoing assistance to fulfill the resident’s agreed upon goals.

● Other tasks as necessary.

● Ability to embrace the challenge of learning and teaching basic technological

concepts related to internet services, computer, and device characteristics, and

common online services and applications.

● Excellent self-organization, language capacity, and cultural competency.

Every day, the American Red Cross sees the heartbreak of people trying to cope with more intense storms, heavier rainfall, higher temperatures, stronger hurricanes and more devastating wildfires.

As more people rely on the Red Cross for help, the need for compassionate volunteers has never been greater.

Volunteers help comfort and support people who are forced from their homes due to fires, storms and other emergencies, so they don’t have to face tough times alone. Join us and turn your compassion into action by becoming a volunteer today. We are actively recruiting for these critical volunteer roles:

Shelter Support Team: During large disasters, you can support the day-to-day activities within a shelter which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Free online training will be provided. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required.

Disaster Health Services Team: During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands on care and education to shelter residents. Free online training will be provided and can count towards nursing continuing education units. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, APRN. Only RNs have full scope of practice.

Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. We supply all the training you need.

Disaster Health Services Responders provide disaster health care by meeting the disaster related health needs of clients and providing support to other volunteers.

Support to the DAT response, shelter operations, emergency aid stations, outreach activities, and casework and recovery planning during a disaster relief operation .

The Chuckanut Center includes a venue for community education that leads to greater resilience. Join our Program support team - managing email requests, providing site orientation for new instructors, working alongside event calendar & scheduling coordinators, recruiting leaders to teach new skills, and supporting our great community of program providers. Typical time 2-3 hours/week. Asking for a minimum 1 year commitment. Hybrid - can be done remotely with on-site visits needed for instructor orientation. 

The Chuckanut Center is seeking a volunteer who loves to celebrate and appreciate volunteers. We need someone to respond to volunteer interest requests, greet new volunteers at work parties, develop fun engagement and create and publicize opportunities for new folks to join our work parties. Typical time commitment 8-12 hours/month. Asking for a minimum 1 year commitment. 

We are a working board. Participating includes lots of opportunities to engage with others and serve in a variety of roles supporting our all-volunteer squads. Squads grow food, maintain our facilities and grounds (house, shed, fence line, orchard), and provide low-cost access for education and wellness activities to a venue that seats 20-25 and includes a full kitchen. Three-year term. Average 10 hours/mo of time. Meetings are 3rd Thursdays and work parties are 10-1 2nd Saturdays, March-November. Parties, potlucks, and special events are abundant. 

Connelly Creek, which runs through this neighborhood park and flows into Padden Creek, needs our help! We’ll remove harmful invasive vegetation and plant native trees and shrubs to improve riparian habitat.

The Bellingham Senior Activity Center focuses on building community, while providing a positive and vibrant environment in which to make new connections and participate in a wonderful array of classes, presentations, discussion groups, and recreational activities. We are looking for friendly people who are interested in helping at our Greeter station in welcoming our members and guests, assisting members with signing in, and distributing lunch tokens to members coming in to enjoy our delicious lunch. The duration of this volunteer shift is 2 1/2 - 3 hours in length, and has an option of sitting, standing, or a combination of both.

Come join our Amazing Meals on Wheels Volunteer Team! 

Are you a kind and compassionate person who wants to make a difference and have a positive impact for senior members in our community? If the answer is yes, then this is the opportunity for you!

We have a team of amazing volunteers who bring meals to homebound seniors in our community Monday thru Friday, delivering over 4000 meals each week. Our Meals on Wheels clients struggle to cook for themselves for a variety of reasons: some lost a loved one who did the cooking, some suffer from physical limitations, some face cognitive decline, others struggle to leave the house to get groceries for cooking.  Whatever the reason, we are there to make sure they have healthy meals.

We are looking for Sub Drivers to fill in when Regular Drivers are on vacation, have an appointment, or are out sick, with the opportunity for a recurring once-a -week route delivery when one arises, if desired. It does require having your own vehicle for transporting meals, with mileage reimbursement available.  

If you are interested in becoming a driver, we would love to have you join us at our next Meals on Wheels Orientation, which is mandatory before being able to deliver meals. (Date TBD) 

Most routes leave our center between 7:45am and 11:00 am Monday-Friday. (No weekend routes) 

To become a volunteer driver: 

1. We ask volunteers to participate in an orientation (approx. 1.5 hours) to learn about being a driver and how to handle various situations.  

 2. We ask volunteers to fill out a Volunteer Application so that we can run a background check (required by DSHS). Feel free to come by the Bellingham Senior Activity Center and pick up an application, or apply online at:  www.whatcomcoa.org  (Click on "VOLUNTEER" in the upper right corner of the homepage, and then scroll about halfway down the page to access the beginning of the application)

3)  We will verify Driver's License and Auto Insurance and make a copy of both at the Meals on Wheels Orientation.

4) Before delivering a route, we ask drivers to go on a ride-along with one of our experienced drivers so it is a smooth transition for our participants and our drivers.

Come Join Our Amazing Volunteer Team!

The Coffee Bar Helper entails serving coffee, tea, sodas, and pre-packaged snacks to our members at the Bellingham Senior Activity Center. This volunteer position is responsible for the set-up or breakdown of the Coffee Bar (depending on which shift you are volunteering for), stocking supplies, wiping tables with a sanitized towel at the beginning of each shift, in between Coffee Bar customers, and at the end of each shift, washing coffee pots, and cleaning up the coffee station at the end of each shift. It is a fairly slow-paced coffee bar, with no making of espresso drinks-just brewing pump pots of coffee...definitely not a Starbucks. This position includes a combination of sitting and standing, with a chair/stool provided. The shift duration is 3 - 3 1/2 hours in length. It is also a wonderful opportunity to make new connections and build lasting friendships!

The Roots of Empathy program is delivered to elementary school children who are coached to recognize and connect with the vulnerability and humanity of a baby who visits their classroom throughout the school year with their parent(s), along with a trained Roots of Empathy Instructor using a specialized curriculum. We are looking for families with babies born between May-September 2025 to join us for the school year!

What's Involved?

Support our Food Educators in delivering garden lessons to kids in Whatcom County! We have cooking clubs after school on Mondays and Fridays, and school day lessons during the school day Tuesday-Thursday in the Bellingham, Ferndale, Nooksack Valley and Mount Baker elementary schools!

You will be helping kids in garden class to explore nature and food through gardening, joyful science activities, and hands-on garden tasks. You must sign up to volunteer through your school district and go through a background check before volunteering with kids.

Help care for a school garden in your neighborhood/area! Attend a volunteer orientation or scheduled volunteer hours and learn what to do, then volunteer on your own and take care of the school garden by watering, weeding, harvesting and beautifying! Volunteers under the age of 13 are very welcome but must bring an older sibling or an adult. Please note that not every garden is wheelchair accessible--but some are!

Please note there are different kinds of opportunities. Some schools have a scheduled time when you can garden with other volunteers (Birchwood, Cordata and Roosevelt in Bellingham; Nooksack and Sumas further east) if that's your jam or if you are just learning to garden and would like some guidance. Other schools have more independent volunteer opportunities. There's something for everyone! 

Come and spend time with foster children who are staying at The Landing!

Every shift looks different at The Landing, since we have a high turn over rate of the children who come to stay.  We care for kids by providing them a safe and fun environment, participating in activities like Summit Trampoline Park, Creativitea, the movies, and LOTS of parks! 

Volunteers are asked to serve for a minimum of once a month. We are open 24/7 and have many shifts to suit your availability. Washington State does require a few things to complete before volunteering, so inquire about this opportunity and meet with our Volunteer Coordinator to get started!

The mission of Skookum Kids is to eliminate the pain points that make foster care so difficult, we do this by involving the whole community in the important work of child welfare.  Skookum Kids is a 501(c)3 non profit based in Bellingham, WA.  

This monthly event is an awesome (and easy!) way to support foster parents and caregivers in our community.  Volunteers are needed from 5:40-8:45 pm to provide childcare, snacks and games with kids while their caregivers take a few hours off! 

We are eager to host Family Night Out the first Friday in October and November this fall!

Come and have a sleepover with the children who are staying overnight at The Landing- an emergency placement house for children first entering foster care.  Overnight shifts are from 9pm-7am or 8pm-8am 7 days a week.

The mission of Skookum Kids is to eliminate the pain points that make foster care so difficult, we do this by involving the whole community in the important work of child welfare.  Skookum Kids is a 501(c)3 non profit based in Bellingham, WA.  

As you know, recent state funding cuts drastically reduced our Financial Aid completion support program. While we continue to offer one-on-one support for complex cases and will host virtual support events from October–December with the College Success Foundation, the truth is: we can’t reach every student alone.

This is where you and our community come in. Together, we can ensure that students and families don’t lose out on vital financial aid simply because they don't have information or guidance. Imagine the impact if every workplace, neighborhood, student, and parent group had someone who could help navigate FAFSA and WASFA applications. 

Call to Action for Adult Community Members

Make a difference by helping families complete financial aid applications. Join us in training 200 community members, 100 in Whatcom County and 100 in Skagit County, to serve as Financial Aid completion navigators. With the support of WSAC, CSF, BTC, SVC, and WCC, people will learn how to guide families through FAFSA and WASFA applications (blog post here). Participants will also have the chance to take an optional 30-minute tour of Skagit Valley College or Whatcom Community College before the training. This training opportunity is a great way to give back while learning more about the campuses where many of students’ futures begin. Win-win! Bellingham At Home (BAH), a non-profit membership organization, is a virtual Village in Bellingham WA empowering older adults to stay active and engaged while living in their own homes and neighborhoods.  It is a program of the Whatcom Council on Aging.

The Village is powered by volunteers who provide “good neighbor” assistance to older folks in our community. Volunteers provide transportation to medical appointments and other services in Bellingham, take members shopping, provide companionship, complete light home repairs and garden maintenance, and other tasks as needed.  (BAH does NOT provide medical assistance, personal care, nor ongoing cleaning and maintenance tasks.)

If you are searching for opportunities to use your skills to support the Bellingham community and enjoy talking with interesting people who have many life experiences to share, you’d make a great BAH volunteer. Most assistance requests are for 2-hour time slots and you can let us know when you are available.  There is no weekly commitment; flexibility to meet your own schedule. Reports to:  Resource Center Manager 

Summary:  The RC/CJ Front Desk and Special Project Volunteer spends part of their time overseeing the front desk of the Resource Center and the other part working on special projects that support the operation of Ferndale Community Services.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Front desk: 

Greet guests and meet needs, talking with guests and maintaining confidentiality as much as possible. Answer questions about programs and services and pass messages when necessary. 

Assist guests with clothing bank items as needed. 

Distribute direct services upon request, including hygiene items, food, gas cards, bus passes, shower passes, laundry vouchers, and gift cards following all procedures for proper documentation and tracking. 

Refer guests with more complicated needs to Community Resource Navigator. 

Answer phones and return voicemails. 

Assist guests with computer, printer, and fax access as needed. 

Help guests find community resources via online search, with or for them.  Help with phone access as needed. 

Accept donations and follow all procedures for tracking and storing. 

Keep Resource Center clean, tidy and organized.

Position:  Clothing Bank Donation Sorter

Reports to:  Clothing Bank Coordinator

Summary:  The Clothing Bank helper works with the Clothing Bank Coordinator to sort, fold, and stock clothing for the clothing bank program inside the Ferndale Community Resource Center

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Requirements:

Training and Supervision:  The Clothing Bank Helper receives the Volunteer Manual which outlines all policies and procedures for the position, and also receives in person training within their first week of service.  Follow up training is available as needed and questions are encouraged.

Evaluation:  Informal, verbal evaluation occurs after the first month of service.  Check-ins with the Clothing Bank Coordinator on personal performance, strengths and challenges occur annually.

Time Commitment:  This position is year-round with sorting taking place 1-2 days per week.  Estimated total hours per week, up to 10.

We are looking for a club or volunteer to partner with us for an indoor or outdoor activity for middle school aged students visiting the store on early release day. Students have enjoyed supervised outdoor activities, small art or book related activities, scavenger hunts, and other similar events in the past. We have an event space available. Early release is typically the 2nd and 3rd Thursday of each month and activities are needed from 130 to 315 or so.

Receive, weigh, sort, package, & load incoming food and goods that have been recovered from community partners & saved from the landfill!  

Receive:  Volunteer drivers deliver recovered food & goods from 9:30 -11:00am

Weigh:  All donations are weighed, to allow us to track what's been recovered

Sort:  Decide what is for Hubs & what gets to go to compost/the pigs!

Package:  Box according to the needs of receiving hubs

Load:  As volunteer drivers arrive, help them load their hub's packaged food and send them on their way to feed our county!

Substitute/On call drivers - We are always looking for substitute drivers for any weekday and would add you to the call/text list.  Sometimes we need coverage for planned vacations or last minute.

Coaches are the heart of our program! Each season, volunteer coaches inspire and guide a team through our tried-and-true curriculum once or twice a week after school for 8 weeks. Not a runner? No problem, all you need is a desire to support and encourage girls. Coaches can be 16 to 106, they can be professionals, retirees, students - anyone who is ready to make a direct impact on Whatcom County youth! The season culminates in a celebratory 5K when all teams come together to test their mettle by completing the 5K distance!

Join us for 8 unforgettable weeks, but beware - the girls are known to steal your heart!

Wild Whatcom’s Board of Directors is vital to the current and ongoing success of the organization. Our Board provides strategic direction and accountability, helps develop goals, works to increase financial capacity, conducts public relations, and generally works for the well being of the organization. We also believe that serving on the Board should be fun, educational, and rewarding!

We are currently seeking board directors for our 2025-26 year. Volunteers help with barn chores, readying the horses, tack, equipment, and work in the arena assisting participants with lessons.

Side-Walkers: The responsibility of the side-walker is to help ensure safety of the rider throughout the lesson. You may be asked to provide physical support, as well as assist them in completing tasks when they need assistance.

Horse Leader: The leader is responsible for leading and maintaining control of the horse at a walk and trot.

Volunteers commit to helping with lessons one afternoon per week for the duration of the 6-week session. Lessons are held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

Kulshan Carbon Trust (KCT) is seeking a creative and detail-oriented volunteer to help enhance and maintain our website. Our site is the “front window” for the organization—how we share our mission, invite collaboration, and connect with our community. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for environmental action, user-focused design, and clear communication. You’ll work closely with our team to update content, improve navigation, modernize visual elements, and ensure the site effectively tells the story of our work and impact.

Responsibilities:

Update and refine existing pages to better reflect KCT’s mission, programs, and current projects.

Create new pages for priority areas, such as board/advisor recruitment and partner collaboration opportunities.

Improve visual elements by incorporating authentic images of KCT’s work and events.

Enhance the organization and clarity of project and resource pages for easier navigation.

Help develop interactive or hub-style resource sections (e.g., a Pacific Northwest biochar resource hub).

Ensure the site is visually engaging, mobile-friendly, and accessible.

Girls Rugby is a nonprofit empowerment based organization working to help girls reach their fullest potential both on an off the pitch! We provide inclusive and accessible flag rugby programming for Girls in 2nd through 8th grade regardless of experience level!

DVSAS Volunteer Advocates ensure that no matter when it is, or where they are, victims of intimate partner violence or sexual assault don’t have to be alone. After you've completed your training, you'll be working directly with DVSAS clients. You'll answer calls on our helpline, meet with clients in our office, accompany clients to the hospital for forensic exams, and provide support for clients at hearings.

We ask volunteers to commit to one 4 hour shift per week for a year after your training. Our next training class starts on September 15th!

Summary:  The Supply Bundler Volunteer helps package goods for distribution through our Mobile Resource Center. They are given a checklist of supplies, which are provided by B2S, to create bundles that are given to unhoused individuals and families.Volunteers are able to either work on site at our administrative building or pick up the supplies and bundle them at home.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Package goods for distribution following a provided checklist, ensuring that all required supplies are included in each bundle. 

Ensure that goods are packaged in such a way that they will not be damaged when transported. 

Coordinate with B2S Program Manager to schedule bundling shifts, or for volunteers who wish to work from home, scheduling pick up times for bundling supplies.  

Communicate to the B2S Program Managerany issues with supply availability or quality.

Summary:  The Donation Transport Volunteer picks up donations from drop locations around Whatcom County. Volunteers commit to maintain between 1-5 donation drop locations: picking up and transporting donations to our B2S warehouse, scheduling pickups and drop offs, keeping the donation drop box and nearby area clean, and helping maintain a good relationship with donation drop host sites.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Regularly check assigned drop box locations for any donations. 

Keep drop boxes and the nearby area clean, picking up any garbage in the immediate area. 

Check in with host businesses to see if any problems have been reported. 

Coordinate with B2S Program Manager toschedule donation drop off times at the B2S warehouse.  

Communicate to the B2S Program Managerthe status of each drop box when checked, including info on any damaged or missing boxes and any problems reported by host businesses.

OUTREACH & EVENTS COMMITTEE

Help build awareness and support for our mission and programs! As part of the Outreach and Events Committee (aka Outreach Otters), you will join us at our info tables at community events and fundraisers like nature trivia at local pubs. Other activities can be done on your own time, like posting flyers, prepping prize bags, and writing thank you cards. Commitment: meets monthly with a suggested one-year term. We ask that you volunteer for a minimum of four community events (average time is 2-4 hours each) per year. We are seeking Classroom Assistant volunteers to assist in English classes at BTC and WCC for the 2025-2026 academic year.  Classes are in the morning and evening.  The minimum commitment is one class (2 hrs per week) for one academic quarter. 

Adult education lifts people out of poverty. Having a GED or a high school diploma means higher salaries, good job opportunities, and better working conditions.

Summary:  The OB Distribution Volunteer helps with product distribution during the designated distribution times.  Provides friendly and patient customer service to patrons of the program.  Shift is once a week for 2 hours.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Greet guests and helps them register and/or place order using the order form. 

Understands program criteria and rules and clearly explains them and answers questions. 

Fills guest orders from the form. 

Can make pleasant conversation with guests, is patient and helpful with non-native English speakers, welcoming and warm with all guests including children. 

Can hold to firm but gentle boundaries.

Want to spend some time with the Whatcom Land Trust Stewardship team and learn a bit more about some of the land trust conservation sites? Sign up for a Field Friday adventure! We have six seats open for volunteers to ride along for property monitoring, maintenance, and other stewardship activities. These are working days, and are not for the faint of heart! Volunteers should be prepared with tough, weather appropriate footwear and ready to walk several miles off-trail on rugged, uneven, brushy ground. While the traversing may be challenging, the rewards are immense. Volunteers will have the opportunity to visit parts of properties rarely (if ever!) seen by the public, learn about WLT’s stewardship goals and processes, and participate in restoration activities.

Transportation is provided. The truck will leave from the WLT office at 8 am and will return by 4 pm. Please pack a lunch, weather appropriate layers, and rain gear.

Work Parties are a great way to make a difference while learning about properties that contain important ecological benefits and how we restore these special places through stewardship. After your initial training and orientation, you will join a team of dedicated and passionate volunteers to be on-call when your language skills are needed.
