KMRE is a non-commercial, community operated radio station. The station's programming features local news in addition to roots music, conversational and educational programs, and arts & culture.
Our local news is "by our community, for our community". Local people gather, write, and announce the news. There are opportunities for news writers, field reporters, and announcers.

Volunteer graphic designer will help the station by designing digital and print assets to promote KMRE, encourage listenership, and increase underwriting. Materials may include individual posters, postcards for shows, web graphics, an annual report with a dashboard, custom icons and a limited edition t-shirt graphics for the benefit of the station. Works directly with the General Manager and the Program Director. Hours are flexible, and work is remote. 

Our Thrift Shop is located at 4151 Meridian Street in Bellingham Washington! We are currently looking for some fantastic folks to add to our amazing team of volunteers at the thrift store. KMRE is expanding our signal and we're seeking a professional, experienced Grant Writer, who is primarily responsible for developing and writing grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making organizations and will persuasively communicate our mission and programs to potential funders. The Grant Writer researches, writes, and prepares government, foundation, and corporate grant proposals and reports that align with KMRE's mission.

Research, write, and submit compelling and timely letters of inquiry and grant proposals to foundations, corporations, and government entities.

Francis Place is seeking a volunteer to come in to give haircuts to tenants at no cost. This volunteer will have to supply any necessary equipment or supplies needed in order to give haircuts. We are looking for someone flexible and consistent, who can roll with challenging behaviors with a non-judgmental attitude. During your time at Francis Place you can expect to make meaningful connections with members of your Bellingham community.

The Blaine Senior Center serves 5 hot meals daily in the Center.  We are looking for friendly people to help one day a week for about an hour: serve food, bus tables, and prepare dishes for the dishwasher.  

The front desk is the welcoming introduction to the Blaine Senior Center.  This person welcomes members, ensures a friendly check-in, gives tours of the Center to potential new members, answers the phone and directs calls and in person questions to the appropriate resource.  The front desk also helps ensure a welcoming and clean environment and supports office staff when appropriate.

Volunteers and their dogs get involved by listening to students in the community practice their reading skills. Dogs are great listeners and children don’t feel judged when reading to them. We always need new volunteers and friendly pups!

We are a collection of individuals from northwest Washington and Vancouver, Canada. We are all volunteers, so we do not take any salaries, but we do have paid staff in Kenya. We have several major partners in Kenya that include some of the major game conservancies, and a nationwide group that provides digital education and support across the region.

AfreTech is a non-profit in the US/Canada, and a registered NGO in Kenya under the name of 'ARES'. Our focus in delivering high quality digital education solutions in parts of rural East Africa that lack quality schools, have limited/no power, and limited/no internet. The ARES education system is an offline system that provides a massive amount of high-quality content along with notebooks, projectors, networking, etc. It also includes a significant amount of training and local support. We have over 75 systems installed now across East Africa now and are growing rapidly. We have recently been certified by the Kenyan Government for use in public school systems. We are planning a major expansion of our projects in east Africa in 2023 and need to secure significant funding in order to accomplish that. We need a volunteer that can assist (or lead) us in the research and planning for this effort. The position will mostly be focused on researching quality funding opportunities and preparing documents to submit for application. The existing leadership team will handle presentations, etc. as needed. (However, if the volunteer is interested in participating in that they are welcome.) The work hours are completely flexible. The key to success is a passion for helping students in remote rural villages gain access to a quality education opportunity, and a comfort level with research, writing, and strong communication skills. Previous experience with fund raising is very helpful, but not a pre-requisite.   

Volunteer sorters and checkers will accept donations of gently used clothing, bed linens and towels.  Items will be sorted to determine cleanliness and amount of wear. Acceptable items will have no stain, rips or broken zippers. Items deemed unacceptable will be either discarded or forward on to Good Will. Acceptable items will be displayed on appropriate racks or bins.  During hours of operation volunteers will greet and assist customers with selection of items.  Volunteer will log in items chosen by customer, listing name and town and verifying the number of items is with the guidelines. At the end of the open hours of operation volunteer will sweep and tidy up the facility.

 Hours of operation Mondays and Fridays 9 am - noon, Wednesday 5 pm - 7.  

Many of our residents suffer from loneliness and a lack of meaningful connection with stable, supportive people who are not paid service providers. We are seeking resident companions to spend quality time with residents. This could include socializing at Francis Place and accompanying residents on individual or community outings. It could be as simple as going on a walk to the nearest beach or coffeehouse. Volunteers would be required to use their own vehicles if driving is necessary, and fill out a volunteer application for Catholic Community Services. The Lynden Pioneer Museum needs docents and volunteers to help share our wonderful museum with visitors.  

No experience or special skills necessary, just a welcoming attitude!

Docents greet visitors, take admission, handle sales at the gift shop, and help start visitors on their self-guided tour of the museum.  

There are morning and afternoon shifts, and flexible schedules.  Come with a friend or make new ones! Visitors love our volunteers and docents and so do we!

Whatcom Intergenerational High School is the first public charter school in Whatcom County! We are a non-profit, mission-driven school focused on serving high school students from all backgrounds and life circumstances. This first year, we are opening to 9th and 10th grade (ages 13-16).

The Community Ally role is one where multigenerational community members from Whatcom County can volunteer to interact with high school students and fellow volunteers as each embarks on their own journeys of learning and growth. Student and community allies will have a communal responsibility of supporting each other in a holistic way, understanding that no part(s) of us are left out of a school environment and can have real impacts on our growth if not acknowledged.

In this role, volunteers will be able to participate in Morning Circle times, Phenomena Learning, off site excursions, and other WIHS events. We are looking for individuals who can donate 2 days a week for 2-3 hours a day. This person will also be invited to build relationships with current community allies through attending feedback sessions, appreciation gatherings, and cohort meetings.

Volunteers are needed every Tuesday from 7:30am - 12:30pm (or whenever you can arrive) to distribute food to Foothills Food Bank customers! Volunteers will help the grocery-style model pantry run efficiently by restocking shelves, guiding guests through their shopping experience (answering questions, finding products for them, etc), and a bit of clean up at the end.

Whatcom County Health Department in partnership with a community collaborative, Whatcom Taking Action,is seeking volunteers and/or interns to support health promotion through developing communication resources for families with a child that has a special health care need. The ideal candidate has a background in health promotion, health equity, education, communication, media or technology and/or a relevant background and experiences. 

Currently seeking volunteers that are available to assist in health promotion through the development and editing of family-friendly materials and providing administrative support. The schedule is flexible but ideally, 5-15 hours/week with a minimum 6-month commitment.

Ski to Sea is Bellingham and Whatcom County’s largest event, made up of seven legs from Mt. Baker to Bellingham Bay. After a two-year hiatus, we are beyond excited to host this year's race on May 29th, 2022!

We are seeking volunteers for a number of positions at different locations around Whatcom County. The seven legs of the relay are: Cross Country Skiing, Downhill Ski/Snowboard, Running, Road Bike, Canoe, Cyclocross, and Sea Kayak. We also need volunteers to help with equipment transfer, packet pick-up, course clearing and the finish line.

The Environmental Education Intern will assist with classroom and field instruction for K-12 programs throughout Skagit County. Content will focus on salmon ecology and freshwater habitat restoration.

This volunteer shift takes place at the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center (EWRRC), which is about 40 minutes outside of the city of Bellingham. We know that this can be a far drive for some and we really appreciate your willingness to come out and volunteer with us. 

Volunteering at Catholic Housing Services’ Villa Santa Fe site (VSF). Bakerview Family Housing, LLC, also known as Villa Santa Fe apartments, is designated as a farmworker housing area and home to many different cultures. It encompasses a 50 unit apartment complex along with its office space and community rooms. In-person work strongly requested.

It encompasses a 50 unit apartment complex along with its office space and community rooms. In-person work strongly requested.

The Alternative Humane Society will do everything possible to make the right match for both the foster home and the animal that we have rescued. Agreeing to foster an animal means taking on a big responsibility. We try to ensure that everyone in your household realizes this. We interview prospective foster families to ensure they can provide both the required daily care and also give lots of love! Before placing an animal into your care, we also conduct a house visit and discuss any special needs that the animal may have.

We pay for medical care, and any other special costs, that an animal may require while in a foster home.

Food FARMacia is a program designed by Sea Mar Community Health Centers through the Health Education program as a way to provide patients with access to fresh produce at no cost. This program is made possible through donations from City Sprouts Farm, Sustainable Connections, the Bellingham Food Bank, and Christ the King Church. With these donations, Sea Mar has been able to provide patients with access to produce they may not be able to purchase on a weekly basis due to economic barriers amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Health Education department aims to give patients the opportunity to try new vegetables by providing a variety of items every week along with helpful information that can be useful to patients when experimenting with new foods. The Food FARMacia began in December 2019 and is quickly gaining the attention of surrounding communities. We are hoping to recruit volunteers in order to sustain the program for as long as possible and continue helping those in need.

The Food FARMacia takes place on a weekly basis at two different locations. Volunteers are able to commit to one of the two sites or commit to both. Each Food FARMacia event lasts about 2.5 hours and volunteers are expected to allot for a 3-4 hour time commitment every week. Due to COVID-19, the Food FARMacia has been moved outside of both clinics in order to help patients and ensure a safe practice of social distancing. Please note that the Food FARMacia will continue to happen and will need volunteers RAIN or SHINE!

The Bellingham Farmers Market is still in a modified format due to covid and need one volunteer every Saturday April 3rd- December 18th. We are capping the number of customers that come into the pavilion at one time to 35 and would like a volunteer to greet and count those customers as they enter the pavilion. You must be able to stand the entire time, direct and or interact with customers with confidence. Although the location you'd be standing is covered you should still be prepared to weather and dress accordingly.

KMRE wants people who are interested in local media and believe in the power of community radios. Producers are responsible for creating an outline for the story they are telling, coordinating recording sessions, and editing the recordings into a final product. Producers work in the KMRE studios, as well as out in the community. Producers are assigned stories, and also pitch their own ideas.

This position requires the ability to listen and communicate well and use recording, sound board and editing equipment and programs. No previous experience required! We exist to train and educate as well as bring community voices and sounds to life.

Home studio producers/podcasts are welcome to propose a program.

The PNW Rotary Green Bag Food Drive is inviting donors to sign up to get a Green Bag, then shop for items to be collected every other month which are picked up and taken to the Ferndale Food Bank as a donation from you.

This volunteer shift takes place at the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center (EWRRC), which is about 40 minutes outside of the city of Bellingham. We know that this can be a far drive for some and we really appreciate your willingness to come out and volunteer with us.

Please feel free to be creative! We need patchwork quilts to decorate every twin-sized bed in our cabins. The size of the quilt should be 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. Please make sure these quilts are machine washable and are not too heavy or warm.

Warm Fuzzies, which each camper takes home at the end of camp, are sewn to a pre-made pattern. This ensures all fuzzies are consistent in size and shape. The children we serve often have severe allergies and sensitivities, which limits our use of supplies to only new fabric that is machine washable. The Community Boating Center (CBC) is a 501.c.3 nonprofit fostering safe small vessel recreation on Bellingham Bay. The CBC was founded in 2006 and began services to the public in 2007. Much-appreciated tax-deductible donations, season-pass sales, dry-moorage fees, and rentals of sailboats and human-powered watercraft enable the CBC to provide the safety and skills education that are the core of the organization’s Mission. The Generations Corner Shop serves as a fundraising opportunity for Generations Early Learning and Family Center. It is operated by Generations with the help of our fabulous volunteers. The Corner Shop is located in the hallway between Summit Place Assisted Living and Mt. Baker Care Center and gives residents access to some necessities not offered by their residency, as well as some of their favorite treats and gifts for their loved ones. Volunteers not only work the Corner Shop but have become a part of the daily lives of the residents who shop there.

Volunteers must be able to handle money, and must be comfortable learning our card processing through Square on a tablet, as well as run the shop on their own while volunteering, we are a phone call or a short walk away if help is needed. We will of course do some hands on training. This job is great for anyone, any age/ability. Will need to pass a specific background check with Mount Baker Care Center to be working in their facility.

The WDRC Fundraising Events Committee is looking for community member(s) to volunteer in a committee support role. One or more days a week, Monday - Friday, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Currently needed for Tuesdays and on call substitutes for all days.  Requires use of your own insured vehicle (mileage reimbursement available).  Familiarity with the Lynden/North county area is helpful, but not essential.

Assist cooking staff in preparing noon meal at community/senior center, one or more days a week, (open Monday through Friday).  Hours are approximately 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Must have or obtain Food Worker Card at www.foodworkercard.wa.gov. (Computer assistance available at the Center)            The card is good for 2 years and costs $10.

Bellingham Community Meal Program serves hot, nutritious FREE meals on the last Saturday of the month from January through October at Assumption Church, 2116 Cornwell Ave. Meals are for anyone who is hungry in our community and the county.

Individuals and groups can volunteer for a 2-3 hour shift between the hours of 8am and 5pm. Come once or come every month (or for any number of times that works for you).

All volunteers are invited to help us create a welcoming environment for our guests. BCMP strives to make our setting feel more like a restaurant than a soup kitchen, and much of this depends on our volunteers treating guests with dignity and respect. Volunteers may be doing any of the following activities: preparing food and/or cooking, setting up the dining room, serving beverages, serving food, bussing or resetting tables, washing dishes or pots and pans, assisting in the kitchen, taking down tables and chairs, cleaning up the dining hall and the kitchen areas.

This is a site where there is work to do for people between the ages of 8 and 95!

Alternative Humane Society needs Case Managers in various Bellingham and Whatcom County neighborhoods. The job of the case manager is to find the perfect match for each dog he or she is case managing. You will work with various foster homes keeping an open line of communication to ensure the dog is progressing socially and getting up to date on all vaccinations and medical care at our pre-chosen vet clinics, as well as up to date training and daily exercise. You will write an enticing Petfinder.com and Adoptapet.com bio and take flattering pictures of the dog with the help of the dogs' foster parents. You will ensure the dogs' traits and needs are met and that the dog is adopted into a home that is a perfect match for each individual case. You will respond to each applicant whether it be a match or not and set up meet n greets with good candidates. You will abide by Alternative Humane Society policies and procedures to rehome various dogs in need. You will supply foster homes with various supplies, treats, food, etc. provided by the organization. Majority of duties can be completed via email. Occasional transport and presence at events is required. Saving the lives of dogs is a very rewarding volunteer job and you will continue to gain knowledge and create bonds throughout your volunteer time with AHS.

We are looking for someone who has an interest and knowledge of growing population of baby boomers to lead exercise on a weekly basis. Tia Chi, Seated Yoga, Stretch and Strengthen or other suggested exercise appropriate for seniors of independent living conditions is needed.  Ultimately we'd like to have at least one exercise class each day of the week. 

Must be insured and willing to add MHNW Facility on insurance documentation for duration of term agreed upon with Resident Services.   

Work in support of information and education programs for families of individuals with developmental disabilities. Research, organize, develop, and distribute resource information in printed, electronic, web, and social media formats. Assist with workshop and event preparation, outreach, presentations, grant research, reporting, record keeping, data entry, organization, and management of client data. Responsibilities can be tailored to the strengths and interests of the volunteer or intern. Minimum three month commitment, 5-15 hours/week. Availability on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays is preferred.

Can you write grants? Can you help us obtain the funds to support our needed programs? For over 30 years the Alternative Humane Society has survived based on our fund-raising, adoptions, and donations. We have two great needs that we cannot manage to underwrite on our own: preventing unwanted dog and cat births through spay/neuter assistance and vet bills for the dogs that come to us with severe health issues. We have already saved thousands of animals, educated and supported the community, but it is not enough. With proper funding, we can help to break the cycle of unwanted pet births. We know the funding is there, we need someone with the skills to help us obtain it.

Experience researching grant opportunities. The ability to make initial contacts with grantors; organized and able to follow instructions carefully; skills at writing proposals; persuasive--effective and fluent use of language; willingness to follow through with grant completion activities; able to manage deadlines; ability to pull together information from various sources.

Donor Monitors at Bloodworks NW fill a critical role in the blood collection process by watching donors for potential reaction symptoms following their blood donation. They also provide a critical customer service link in making sure donors are comfortable and provided with snacks and fluids, as well as friendly conversation.
