My name is Jess, and I am a Bellingham resident currently compiling a comprehensive file documenting errors, inconsistencies, and procedural failures in a local housing assistance program with the intention to try to bring awareness to how these programs are being implemented vs how they are intended and give a deeper context of the experiences of a very vulnerable population that has historically not been able to achieve much viable advocacy for themselves.

The Haskell Lions Eye Clinic provides FREE eye exams and glasses for low-income homeless, immigrant, and elderly residents.  Established in 2011, it uses all volunteer help and donations to run the only clinic of its kind north of Seattle.

We need someone to organize patient files before their appointments.  We're only open 2 afternoons per month, with this work requiring 2 or 3 hours each session - total 4-6 hours a month.

Here's a great way to help your fellow man and earn karma points while you're at it.  Plus, looks good on a resume for younger folk.  The Haskell Lions Eye Clinic provides FREE eye exams and glasses to low-income homeless, immigrant, and elderly residents, using only volunteers and donations. 

Open only two afternoons a month, so it's a modest commitment.  You'd be helping the clinic manager review and input applications, contacting applicants to make appointments, help schedule our volunteers, and other administrative tasks.  It's about half interacting with people/half paper & computer work.  About 10-12 hours a month total, and flexible: Work from home and/or the clinic.    

No experience needed!  We are a FREE clinic, providing eye exams and glasses to low-income homeless, immigrant, and elderly residents.  Before seeing an eye doctor, our patients get tested on a few machines first, and that's where we need help.  We'll train you to do this.  It's easy work in a friendly atmosphere of males, females, young, and old.

We provide FREE eye exams to needy residents.  Before seeing a doctor, patients' eyes are tested on a few pieces of vision equipment, saving the doctor's precious time.  Volunteers need no previous experience, and will be trained on the simple testing procedures.  

LGBTQ+ Western's annual ceremony celebrating our LGBTQ+ community and our Lavender Graduates. Anyone graduating during the 2025-2026 academic year can be recognized at the ceremony, as well as our Legacy Lavender Graduates!

Help Wild Whatcom throw a bird-themed party for up to 150 guests, to help raise funds to create nature access for all - especially local youth!

We need day-of support for event set up and decorating, guest check in, silent auction management, food and beverages, raise the paddle tracking, A/V equipment, taking event photos/video, and clean up/tear down.

NOTE: While this is a one-day commitment (4+ hours, based on your availability), we expect volunteers to attend a short event orientation so that you can ask questions, get details, and know what to expect.

Bellingham At Home (BAH), a non-profit membership organization, is a virtual Village in Bellingham WA empowering older adults to stay active and engaged while living in their own homes and neighborhoods.  It is a program of the Whatcom Council on Aging.

The Village is powered by volunteers who provide “good neighbor” assistance to older folks in our community. Volunteers provide transportation to medical appointments and other services in Bellingham, take members shopping, provide companionship, complete light home repairs and garden maintenance, and other tasks as needed.  (BAH does NOT provide medical assistance, personal care, nor ongoing cleaning and maintenance tasks.)

If you are searching for opportunities to use your skills to support the Bellingham community and enjoy talking with interesting people who have many life experiences to share, you’d make a great BAH volunteer. Most assistance requests are for 2-hour time slots and you can let us know when you are available.  There is no weekly commitment; flexibility to meet your own schedule. Support our Food Educators in delivering cooking lessons to kids in Whatcom County! We have cooking clubs after school on Mondays and Fridays, and school day lessons during the school day Tuesday-Thursday in the Bellingham, Meridian, Nooksack Valley and Mount Baker elementary schools!

You will be helping 4th and 5th graders to cook a healthy and delicious meal together. You must sign up to volunteer through your school district and go through a background check before volunteering with kids.

Home fires and other disasters can occur any time, any place. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you’ll provide emotional support, financial assistance, and information to help families begin the process of recovery.

We are looking for volunteers to join our team to be on-call purely for translation assistance to ensure we have the workforce able to serve our population. 

After your initial training and orientation, you will join a team of dedicated and passionate volunteers to be on-call when your language skills are needed. With experience and further training you can take on leadership and response coordination roles to have a wider impact. At the same time, you’ll be developing skills that you may choose to apply to larger-scale disaster response efforts with the Red Cross.

Every day, the American Red Cross sees the heartbreak of people trying to cope with more intense storms, heavier rainfall, higher temperatures, stronger hurricanes and more devastating wildfires.

As more people rely on the Red Cross for help, the need for compassionate volunteers has never been greater.

Volunteers help comfort and support people who are forced from their homes due to fires, storms and other emergencies, so they don’t have to face tough times alone. Join us and turn your compassion into action by becoming a volunteer today. We are actively recruiting for these critical volunteer roles:

Shelter Support Team: During large disasters, you can support the day-to-day activities within a shelter which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Free online training will be provided. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required.

Disaster Health Services Team: During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands on care and education to shelter residents. Free online training will be provided and can count towards nursing continuing education units. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, APRN. Only RNs have full scope of practice.

Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. We supply all the training you need.

During Disasters Disaster Action Team (DAT) Duty Officers are the behind-the-scenes heroes who coordinate local emergency responses as they unfold. From the comfort of your home, you’ll ensure that people affected by disasters receive the care and support they need by dispatching trained volunteers to the scene.

The Shelter Resident Transition Service Associate assists shelter residents and disaster victims create long term personal plans to overcome obstacles and transition into a stable housing solution. They play an important role in minimizing disaster caused displacement and aid in long term recovery.

How can you have fun, meet others, enjoy fresh air, and participate hands-on in an important cause — all in a safe manner? Volunteering in one of our outdoor work parties for a few hours to prepare sites and plant trees with us!

As a sport educator and coach for youths, you will volunteer in football training academy for 16-year-old girls and boys who want to play and learn football. You will train them after work and at the weekend. The main sport will be football, but we are as well open for other sports. The footballers will play competitions, improve their football skills and have lots of fun.

Our volunteers do not only conduct training courses but also spend time with the local teams and the trainers. If walking among local teams and refugees while broadening your horizons makes your heart beat faster, we’ll be glad to see you in a track suit!

Because Hope Foundation is a small NGO with limited financial resources, we ask that each volunteer covers their own personal costs during their stay in Cameroon, the flight to Cameroon and the visa. You will be provided with accommodation. We have a safe and comfortable housing or host families. As well three healthy meals a day, pick up and drop off from the airport. With the airport tickets, meals, and place to stay included, it's an estimated $117 per week.

Teaching children and adolescents in the Rising International Bilingual School, Bertoua.

Teaching foreign languages is an ongoing program to attract children and youth to informally learn and gain new experiences with the support of local and international volunteers.

Teaching children in the Rising International Bilingual School – RIBS in Bertoua

Teaching children (3-15 years) in our primary school “Rising International Bilingual School – RIBS” in Bertoua

Are you interested in gaining new skills and improving your leadership? Would you like to develop your athletic skills as trainer/coach/athlete/football player? Are physical activities appealing to you? As a sports instructor and coach for youths, you will volunteer in our sports club, training children and teenagers from 5 to 20 years old. Your goal will be focused on training them to be able to learn to use sports, especially football, to develop life skills such as teamwork, persistence, and organization.

You will understand the community from the inside and create connections with the youth society to create a positive impact on them. Our volunteers do not only conduct training courses but also spend time with the local teams and the trainers. If working among local teams while broadening your horizons makes your heart beat faster, we ’ll be glad to see you in a track suit!

Interested in volunteering your time to support literacy? Become a 1-to-1 tutor for an adult who needs help with reading, writing, math, and/or computer skills.

The Whatcom Literacy Council offers free tutoring services to adult learners who would like to build skills to help them reach their goals as parents, in the workplace, and in the community.  Tutor training provided. Help amplify Wild Whatcom’s outreach and communications on social media and at events. Participate remotely, or combine digital and in-person activities, based on availability and preferences. While the main activity is social media sharing, we ask Social Ambassadors to participate in at least two fundraisers (remote/in person) and/or community events (in person) per year - mix and match to suit your schedule and interests.

Commitment: All/mostly remote, 3 virtual check-ins annually, with a suggested one-year term.

Would you consider helping We Care serve over 600 people each month by giving a few hours of your time?  Individuals and small groups can make a huge difference by serving for three hours. Volunteers start with tidying the store and move to hanging clothing. Spanish speakers encouraged to volunteer.  Families are welcome.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Teens must submit a parental consent form.

Come and have a sleepover with the children who are staying overnight at The Landing- an emergency placement house for children first entering foster care.  Overnight shifts are from 9pm-7am or 8pm-8am 7 days a week.

Volunteers are asked to serve for a minimum of once a month. We are open 24/7, Washington State does require a few things to complete before volunteering, so inquire about this opportunity and meet with our Volunteer Coordinator to get started! We look forward to meeting you!

The mission of Skookum Kids is to eliminate the pain points that make foster care so difficult, we do this by involving the whole community in the important work of child welfare.  Skookum Kids is a 501(c)3 non profit based in Bellingham, WA.  

Come and spend time with foster children who are staying at The Landing!

Every shift looks different at The Landing, since we have a high turn over rate of the children who come to stay.  We care for kids by providing them a safe and fun environment, participating in activities like Summit Trampoline Park, Creativitea, the movies, and LOTS of parks! 

Volunteers are asked to serve for a minimum of once a month. We are open 24/7 and have many shifts to suit your availability. Washington State does require a few things to complete before volunteering, so inquire about this opportunity and meet with our Volunteer Coordinator to get started!

The mission of Skookum Kids is to eliminate the pain points that make foster care so difficult, we do this by involving the whole community in the important work of child welfare.  Skookum Kids is a 501(c)3 non profit based in Bellingham, WA.  

This monthly event is an awesome (and easy!) way to support foster parents and caregivers in our community.  Volunteers are needed from 5:40-8:45 pm to provide childcare, snacks and games with kids while their caregivers take a few hours off! 

We are eager to host Family Night Out the first Friday in October and November this fall!

Volunteers serving as Government Operations Service Associates serve as direct contact with government partners, often in an Emergency Operations Center or other coordination center, during a Disaster Relief Operation to ensure that Red Cross actions are aligned with the government.

Do you have the flexibility to deploy for two weeks to support communities impacted by disaster? The Red Cross is looking to train willing individuals 18 and older to fill a variety of roles during disaster relief operations. All training and travel expenses are fully covered by the Red Cross.

Receive, weigh, sort, package, & load incoming food and goods that have been recovered from community partners & saved from the landfill!  

Receive:  Volunteer drivers deliver recovered food & goods from 9:30 -11:00am

Weigh:  All donations are weighed, to allow us to track what's been recovered

Sort:  Decide what is for Hubs & what gets to go to compost/the pigs!

Package:  Box according to the needs of receiving hubs

Load:  As volunteer drivers arrive, help them load their hub's packaged food and send them on their way to feed our county!

Edit and update the dance schedule. A modest effort, but this a critical avenue for dancers to stay in the know. A couple times a season, the schedule needs to be updated with new band and caller details and then be sent in for printing and pick up.

During Disasters Disaster Action Team (DAT) Duty Officers are the behind-the-scenes heroes who coordinate local emergency responses as they unfold. From the comfort of your home, you’ll ensure that people affected by disasters receive the care and support they need by dispatching trained volunteers to the scene.

The Shelter Resident Transition Service Associate assists shelter residents and disaster victims create long term personal plans to overcome obstacles and transition into a stable housing solution. They play an important role in minimizing disaster caused displacement and aid in long term recovery.

Do you have a Flexible schedule that would allow you to deploy for two weeks to support communities impacted by disasters? The Red Cross is looking to train willing individuals over 18 who want to alleviate human suffering by shortening the time of a disaster caused by displacement. Welcome and greet blood donors during a Red Cross Blood drive by providing exceptional customer services and ensuring a rewarding/positive  experience, so donors return next time.

Enhance your customer service skills and gain experience working directly in healthcare setting. Staff reception area, support donor check-in process with their appointment time, ask donors to read required medical material, and make telephone calls for reminders and additional follow up.

Support hospitality experience by offering refreshments and giving immediate attention to anyone feeling unwell. Invite donors to to return by providing educational information about the positive impact and lifesaving service of blood donations.  Schedule minimum of one 6 hour shift per month.

The Red Cross Logistics Fulfillment Service Associate plays an essential role in disaster response operations by ensuring that congregate shelters receive the necessary supplies. From procuring materials to delivering them efficiently, our logistics team is the backbone of our relief efforts.

We have a resident who is from Japan and while she speaks fluent english I would love to have a volunteer come in who can speak Japanese with her every so often. She lights up like it is Christmas when she has the opportunity to speak in her first language. 

We are seeking Classroom Assistant volunteers to assist in English classes at BTC and WCC for the 2025-2026 academic year.  Classes are in the morning and evening.  The minimum commitment is one class (2 hrs per week) for one academic quarter. 

Adult education lifts people out of poverty. Having a GED or a high school diploma means higher salaries, good job opportunities, and better working conditions.

Interested in volunteering your time to support adult literacy and adult basic education in Whatcom County but don't have the time to commit to 1-to-1 tutoring? Would you like to develop your tutoring skills? We are currently looking for volunteers to serve as classroom tutors in the Adult Basic Education, GED, and ESL courses taught at both Bellingham Technical College and Whatcom Community College. This is a great opportunity for you to give back to the community that only requires about 2 hours of your time each week for an academic quarter. You will be assisting an instructor, so you don't need to worry about lesson planning - just helping students master the material so they can fulfill their educational goals and improve their lives.

LGBTQ+ Western is seeking 2-3 Discord Moderators to volunteer to help us run and manage our Discord server. This is open for students and alum of Western Washington University. Hours per week is flexible.

Support Bellingham Public Schools promise to help each student succeed by volunteering in one of the high schools' after-school tutoring/learning centers. 

Tutors work 1:1 or in small group of students with homework, test review and prep.  The centers meet  after-school at all high schools Monday through Thursday 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tutors needed in all subject areas but math and science expertise are in high demand. Bellingham, Squalicum and Sehome High Schools are currently seeking tutors in-person.  

One hour per week can impact student achievement.

Volunteer coaches and judges help students build critical thinking and speaking skills. Debate experience helpful but not required.
