Sustainable Connections' Food Recovery Program reduces food insecurity and addresses climate change by recovering and redistributing nutritious surplus food to neighbors in need. We need volunteers to help pick up food from restaurants and transport the food to hunger relief agencies. Sign up here!

We have a diverse list of food recovery opportunities between Monday and Friday from 8 am - 4 pm. Each shift only takes 30 minutes to an hour and works well for people with busy schedules.

We are looking for a club or volunteer to partner with us for an indoor or outdoor activity for middle school aged students visiting the store on early release day. Students have enjoyed supervised outdoor activities, small art or book related activities, scavenger hunts, and other similar events in the past. We have an event space available. Early release is typically the 2nd and 3rd Thursday of each month and activities are needed from 130 to 315 or so.

Receive, weigh, sort, package, & load incoming food and goods that have been recovered from community partners & saved from the landfill!  

Receive:  Volunteer drivers deliver recovered food & goods from 9:30 -11:00am

Weigh:  All donations are weighed, to allow us to track what's been recovered

Sort:  Decide what is for Hubs & what gets to go to compost/the pigs!

Package:  Box according to the needs of receiving hubs

Load:  As volunteer drivers arrive, help them load their hub's packaged food and send them on their way to feed our county!

Substitute/On call drivers - We are always looking for substitute drivers for any weekday and would add you to the call/text list.  Sometimes we need coverage for planned vacations or last minute.

Coaches are the heart of our program! Each season, volunteer coaches inspire and guide a team through our tried-and-true curriculum once or twice a week after school for 8 weeks. Not a runner? No problem, all you need is a desire to support and encourage girls. Coaches can be 16 to 106, they can be professionals, retirees, students - anyone who is ready to make a direct impact on Whatcom County youth! The season culminates in a celebratory 5K when all teams come together to test their mettle by completing the 5K distance!

Wild Whatcom’s Board of Directors is vital to the current and ongoing success of the organization. Our Board provides strategic direction and accountability, helps develop goals, works to increase financial capacity, conducts public relations, and generally works for the well being of the organization. Overview:
Kulshan Carbon Trust (KCT) is seeking a creative and detail-oriented volunteer to help enhance and maintain our website. Our site is the “front window” for the organization—how we share our mission, invite collaboration, and connect with our community. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for environmental action, user-focused design, and clear communication. You’ll work closely with our team to update content, improve navigation, modernize visual elements, and ensure the site effectively tells the story of our work and impact.

Responsibilities:

Update and refine existing pages to better reflect KCT’s mission, programs, and current projects.

Create new pages for priority areas, such as board/advisor recruitment and partner collaboration opportunities.

Improve visual elements by incorporating authentic images of KCT’s work and events.

Enhance the organization and clarity of project and resource pages for easier navigation.

Help develop interactive or hub-style resource sections (e.g., a Pacific Northwest biochar resource hub).

Ensure the site is visually engaging, mobile-friendly, and accessible.

DVSAS Volunteer Advocates ensure that no matter when it is, or where they are, victims of intimate partner violence or sexual assault don’t have to be alone. After you've completed your training, you'll be working directly with DVSAS clients. You'll answer calls on our helpline, meet with clients in our office, accompany clients to the hospital for forensic exams, and provide support for clients at hearings.

We ask volunteers to commit to one 4 hour shift per week for a year after your training. Our next training class starts on September 15th!

Summary:  The Supply Bundler Volunteer helps package goods for distribution through our Mobile Resource Center. They are given a checklist of supplies, which are provided by B2S, to create bundles that are given to unhoused individuals and families.Volunteers are able to either work on site at our administrative building or pick up the supplies and bundle them at home.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Package goods for distribution following a provided checklist, ensuring that all required supplies are included in each bundle. 

Ensure that goods are packaged in such a way that they will not be damaged when transported. 

Coordinate with B2S Program Manager to schedule bundling shifts, or for volunteers who wish to work from home, scheduling pick up times for bundling supplies.  

Communicate to the B2S Program Managerany issues with supply availability or quality.

Summary:  The Donation Transport Volunteer picks up donations from drop locations around Whatcom County. Volunteers commit to maintain between 1-5 donation drop locations: picking up and transporting donations to our B2S warehouse, scheduling pickups and drop offs, keeping the donation drop box and nearby area clean, and helping maintain a good relationship with donation drop host sites.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Regularly check assigned drop box locations for any donations. 

Keep drop boxes and the nearby area clean, picking up any garbage in the immediate area. 

Check in with host businesses to see if any problems have been reported. 

Coordinate with B2S Program Manager toschedule donation drop off times at the B2S warehouse.  

Communicate to the B2S Program Managerthe status of each drop box when checked, including info on any damaged or missing boxes and any problems reported by host businesses.

OUTREACH & EVENTS COMMITTEE

Help build awareness and support for our mission and programs! As part of the Outreach and Events Committee (aka Outreach Otters), you will join us at our info tables at community events and fundraisers like nature trivia at local pubs. Other activities can be done on your own time, like posting flyers, prepping prize bags, and writing thank you cards. Commitment: meets monthly with a suggested one-year term. We ask that you volunteer for a minimum of four community events (average time is 2-4 hours each) per year. We are seeking Classroom Assistant volunteers to assist in English classes at BTC and WCC for the 2025-2026 academic year.  Classes are in the morning and evening.  The minimum commitment is one class (2 hrs per week) for one academic quarter. 

Adult education lifts people out of poverty. Having a GED or a high school diploma means higher salaries, good job opportunities, and better working conditions.

Interested in volunteering your time to support adult literacy and adult basic education in Whatcom County but don't have the time to commit to 1-to-1 tutoring? We are currently looking for volunteers to serve as classroom tutors in the Adult Basic Education, GED, and ESL courses taught at both Bellingham Technical College and Whatcom Community College. This is a great opportunity for you to give back to the community that only requires about 2 hours of your time each week for an academic quarter. You will be assisting an instructor, so you don't need to worry about lesson planning - just helping students master the material so they can fulfill their educational goals and improve their lives.

Summary:  The OB Distribution Volunteer helps with product distribution during the designated distribution times.  Provides friendly and patient customer service to patrons of the program.  Shift is once a week for 2 hours.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Greet guests and helps them register and/or place order using the order form. 

Understands program criteria and rules and clearly explains them and answers questions. 

Fills guest orders from the form. 

Can make pleasant conversation with guests, is patient and helpful with non-native English speakers, welcoming and warm with all guests including children. 

Can hold to firm but gentle boundaries. 

Accept donations and follow all procedures for tracking and storing.

Want to spend some time with the Whatcom Land Trust Stewardship team and learn a bit more about some of the land trust conservation sites? Sign up for a Field Friday adventure! We have six seats open for volunteers to ride along for property monitoring, maintenance, and other stewardship activities. These are working days, and are not for the faint of heart! Volunteers should be prepared with tough, weather appropriate footwear and ready to walk several miles off-trail on rugged, uneven, brushy ground. While the traversing may be challenging, the rewards are immense. Volunteers will have the opportunity to visit parts of properties rarely (if ever!) seen by the public, learn about WLT’s stewardship goals and processes, and participate in restoration activities.

Transportation is provided. The truck will leave from the WLT office at 8 am and will return by 4 pm. Please pack a lunch, weather appropriate layers, and rain gear.

RSVP is required to participate on these field days. Please RSVP on our website. Because we plan our activities around the volunteers expected, we must receive 48 hours’ notice for any cancellations. Work Parties are a great way to make a difference while learning about properties that contain important ecological benefits and how we restore these special places through stewardship. These events are generally held on Saturday mornings in the Spring and Fall from 9am to noon, allowing you to make a big impact in your community in just a few hours! All ages are welcome, and families are highly encouraged to join us. Please bring a reusable water bottle and enough snacks to keep you fueled throughout the event. Disaster Action Teams provide 24-hour emergency response to local disasters, particularly house fires, ensuring that those affected have access to resources for basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing.

Disaster Health Services Team: During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands on care and education to shelter residents. Free online training will be provided and can count towards nursing continuing education units. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, APRN. Only RNs have full scope of practice.  

Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. Road2Home works with the people who are living unsheltered.  Staff and volunteers help them navigate through a complex system to ultimately obtain permanent housing.  Sometimes progress is hampered by outstanding legal issues associated with historical evictions, past due rents, charges that are outstanding, and other situations.  In situations such as these, someone with knowledge of the law and instruction on how to move forward is necessary.

We are looking for someone with the legal experience and capacity to assist, on a pro bono basis.  Your guidance is needed in the resolution of these issues so we can continue progressing on the road to a permanent home for people in our programs.

We offer weekly sessions for 6-10 weeks, and we strive to match mentors with specific students for the entire program duration. These sessions can range from 1 hr to 2.5 hr sessions, depending on the age of the group coming. Middle and High School Groups have longer sessions that usually last 10 week (weather permitting). Elementary School has 1.5 hr long sessions that last 6 weeks. 

What Mentors Do- 

Build Strong Relationships: Mentors provide consistent support and guidance to their assigned student throughout the program. This involves building a strong rapport and creating a safe and trusting environment.

Facilitate Meaningful Interactions: Mentors guide students through various activities, often involving horses and other animals, that promote emotional, social, and physical well-being. Promote Personal Growth: Mentors encourage students to develop essential life skills such as communication, problem-solving, and self-confidence. Provide a Positive Influence: Mentors offer a positive role model and a supportive presence in the lives of their mentees.

Ideal Mentor Qualities: Comfort Around Animals: A genuine love for horses and other animals is essential.

A strong desire to support the growth and development of youth and children in our community.

Patience and Understanding: The ability to connect with and understand the unique needs of each student.

Nearly a million healthy animals in the United States are euthanized each year because of overpopulation, and spaying and neutering is the only real long-term solution to the problem. As a foster-based rescue, we can only take in a limited amount of dogs at one time. Our spay and neuter program is an essential step toward our ultimate goal: a world that's free of homeless, neglected, abused, and abandoned animals.

The purpose of the Water Resources Advisory Board (WRAB) is to help inform and guide the City’s planning and policy regarding the protection and management of water resources, including municipal water, sewer, surface and stormwater systems, controls, rates, and drinking water source protection.

The purpose of the Design Review Board (DRB) is to encourage quality building design and site planning that enhances the character of the city. The DRB, along with select members of the Historic Preservation Commission, reviews proposed development projects for consistency with adopted design standards within the City’s adopted urban villages: Downtown, Old Town, Waterfront, Fairhaven, Barkley, Samish Way and Fountain. Sustainable Connections' Food Recovery Program reduces food insecurity and addresses climate change by recovering and redistributing nutritious surplus food to neighbors in need of food assistance. Misunderstood Mutts Rescue desperately needs foster individuals or families! We can't rescue a dog unless we have a foster home to place them in.

Experience the incredible satisfaction of saving an innocent life and bringing lasting love and stability into their world. Enjoy the companionship of fostering a dog for several weeks, while a forever home is found for them. We pay all expenses (food, clothing/gear, bedding, crate, vet visits, etc.), so the only thing you’re responsible for as a foster is to care for the dog until they’re adopted.

The amount of dogs being dumped, abandoned, & surrendered is overwhelming. We know this makes you as sad & angry as it makes us, so here’s how you can help us save dogs---become a Foster. Foster homes are the reason MMR is able to exist. We don’t work out of a facility, so we depend on fosters to shelter for our dogs until they're adopted. Sometimes we have to turn away dogs who need help strictly because we can’t find a foster home, so if you’ve been considering fostering there’s never been a better time to start.

The goal of the program is to help individuals (Youth 16-24 y.o.) explore career opportunities, learn about labor market information to make informed decisions for future employment opportunities, and ultimately obtain employment. Individuals will receive career guidance, financial literacy education, leadership guidance, and general guidance from their Worksource coordinator.  

The role of the mentor is to act as a coach to the program's youth participants. Mentors assist with goal setting, providing support and guidance towards resource navigation and program completion, and serving as an accountability partner!

Mentors will receive 8 hours of virtual training beginning in Winter 2025, conduct monthly virtual meetings with their youth participants, and quarterly in-person conferences. Our In-Person orientation is held Monday, December 2nd, in Bellingham with both mentors and program participant youth.
