Disaster Health Services Team: During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands on care and education to shelter residents. Free online training will be provided and can count towards nursing continuing education units. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, APRN. Only RNs have full scope of practice.

Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. Gardenview Village occasionally needs volunteers to transport guests to appointments, the grocery store, and other necessary locations. We host an annual event - a poetry contest open to residents of all ages.  For close to 20 years, local poets have been sending us their outstanding creations.  The committee that does all the leg work to make it happen is seeking new members.  You need not be a poet, just interested in helping the arts thrive in our community.  Let us know if you might like to lend a hand.

Assist with the shelter, care and well-being of the animals during the owner's absence. Preferred Experience: Experience with fostering animals is a plus. Road2Home works with the people who are living unsheltered.  Staff and volunteers help them navigate through a complex system to ultimately obtain permanent housing.  Sometimes progress is hampered by outstanding legal issues associated with historical evictions, past due rents, charges that are outstanding, and other situations.  In situations such as these, someone with knowledge of the law and instruction on how to move forward is necessary.

We are looking for someone with the legal experience and capacity to assist, on a pro bono basis.  Your guidance is needed in the resolution of these issues so we can continue progressing on the road to a permanent home for people in our programs.

The Whatcom Literacy Council is a member of ProLiteracy America and a United Way partner agency.  We provide free one-to-one tutoring and small classes. Our tutors can work with learners throughout Whatcom County at a public meeting place and at times that fit our learners' busy schedules. 

Would you consider helping We Care serve over 600 people each month by giving a few hours of your time?  Individuals and small groups can make a huge difference by serving for three hours. Volunteers sort and display clothes, household items, toys, books & shoes and tidy the store. Volunteers may also greet & help shoppers. Spanish speakers encouraged to volunteer.  Families are welcome.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Teens must submit a parental consent form.

The shop-host is responsible for cashiering, cleaning, and greeting customers in our retail space, as well as assisting volunteers and staff with tasks as needed.

Sustainable Connections' Food Recovery Program reduces food insecurity and addresses climate change by recovering and redistributing nutritious surplus food to neighbors in need. We need volunteers to help pick up food from restaurants and transport the food to hunger relief agencies. Sign up here!

We have a diverse list of food recovery opportunities between Monday and Friday from 8 am - 4 pm. Each shift only takes 30 minutes to an hour and works well for people with busy schedules.

This volunteer opportunity requires your availability once a week for roughly two hours. You will work alongside our coaches to assist in the smooth operation of the various available sports our athletes enjoy. Bellingham Special Olympics is looking for a creative, forward-thinking leader to assist the Area Leadership with its fundraising goals. This could be a great opportunity for someone looking to build up their experience in the field of non-profit fundraising and development. This individual will act as a member of the Area Leadership team and must be able to take the initiative to try out fundraising and development strategies. This position will work to recruit new volunteers for local Special Olympics' group. We have seasonal sports listed in the right hand column.  Additionally, the Volunteer Coordinator will establish communication methods to connect with existing volunteers and encourage their continued support of Special Olympics teams in Whatcom county. This is a volunteer leadership position and would be well suited for someone who is independently motivated, an excellent communicator and well organized. Are you enthusiastic about getting kids outdoors? Join our Trail Blazers coach team! We run an after school program where we take groups of elementary school kids to new trails around Bellingham! Each participant has the opportunity to go at their own pace which is made possible by having multiple coaches at each session.

Seeking people who are happiest outdoors and are excited to spread that passion to the younger generation. Two to three miles of running, jogging or walking is required during each afternoon.

Overview: LAW Advocates provides self-help legal advice and help in completing forms for parenting plans and divorces to low-income survivors of domestic violence who have children. These clients are referred by Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services. We are seeking a Clinic Assistant to work directly with the supervising attorney and legal team. 

Commitment: 6 – 10hours/month(Monday – Friday) in downtown Bellingham. Includes attendance at monthly clinics in downtown Bellingham. 

Duties:  

Call clients to complete intakes and schedule for upcoming clinic; 

Send clinic reminder calls, texts and emails;  

Assist attorney and legal team with setting up monthly clinic;  

Maintain accurate case notes in case management software; 

Refer clients to other community resources, as appropriate; 

Close cases, including soliciting feedback from clients and archiving case files; 

Offer feedback to LAW Advocates staff and legal team for improving services;  

Other duties as assigned

Our mentors play a vital role in the success of our school wellness programs. We offer weekly sessions for 6-10 weeks, and we strive to match mentors with specific students for the entire program duration. These sessions can range from 1 hr to 2.5 hr sessions, depending on the age of the group coming. Middle and High School Groups have longer sessions that usually last 10 week (weather permitting). Elementary School has 1.5 hr long sessions that last 6 weeks.

We're seeking people to identify grant opportunities, and write/submit grant proposals to cover costs for canine spays and neuters. Donations, fund-raising, and adoptions makes rescuing dogs possible for our non-profit.

Nearly a million healthy animals in the United States are euthanized each year because of overpopulation, and spaying and neutering is the only real long-term solution to the problem. As a foster-based rescue, we can only take in a limited amount of dogs at one time. Our spay and neuter program is an essential step toward our ultimate goal: a world that's free of homeless, neglected, abused, and abandoned animals.

Misunderstood Mutts Rescue (MMR) is a registered 501(c)3, volunteer-operated organization serving the greater Yakima Valley and Puget Sound region. We are dedicated to saving abandoned, free, and throwaway dogs in areas where abuse, neglect, and cruelty are prevalent.

Misunderstood Mutts Rescue desperately needs foster individuals or families! We can't rescue a dog unless we have a foster home to place them in.

Experience the incredible satisfaction of saving an innocent life and bringing lasting love and stability into their world. Enjoy the companionship of fostering a dog for several weeks, while a forever home is found for them. We pay all expenses (food, clothing/gear, bedding, crate, vet visits, etc.), so the only thing you’re responsible for as a foster is to care for the dog until they’re adopted.

The amount of dogs being dumped, abandoned, & surrendered is overwhelming. We know this makes you as sad & angry as it makes us, so here’s how you can help us save dogs---become a Foster. Foster homes are the reason MMR is able to exist. We don’t work out of a facility, so we depend on fosters to shelter for our dogs until they're adopted. Sometimes we have to turn away dogs who need help strictly because we can’t find a foster home, so if you’ve been considering fostering there’s never been a better time to start.

The goal of the program is to help individuals (Youth 16-24 y.o.) explore career opportunities, learn about labor market information to make informed decisions for future employment opportunities, and ultimately obtain employment. Individuals will receive career guidance, financial literacy education, leadership guidance, and general guidance from their Worksource coordinator.  

The role of the mentor is to act as a coach to the program's youth participants. Mentors assist with goal setting, providing support and guidance towards resource navigation and program completion, and serving as an accountability partner!

Mentors will receive 8 hours of virtual training beginning in Winter 2025, conduct monthly virtual meetings with their youth participants, and quarterly in-person conferences. Our In-Person orientation is held Monday, December 2nd, in Bellingham with both mentors and program participant youth.

We are a small, newly-opened private school.  We are in need of volunteers to help support our students and classroom teachers.

There are multiple vacancies on the newly established Keep Washington Working Act work group. Schedule not yet established, meetings expected to be held every other month through 2025. September 30, 2024, City Council Committee of the Whole meeting in which the Keep Washington Working Act Work Group was established.

The City’s work group will include community members with lived experience and/or connections to the immigrant community in Bellingham and people with experience and training in specified fields relating to the goals and requirements of the act. Join the EduArts Enrichment team! Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth (BAAY) is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with our after school enrichment program, EduArts. Classes are offered MTWF from 2:30 - 3:30 or 4pm and Thursdays from 12:45-2:30pm. Weekly hours for each assistant could vary from 1 to 5 hours per week depending on volunteer availability and interest. The grade ranges of students in each class are K-2nd and 3rd-5th.

BAAY's volunteer internships are a valuable means of getting hands-on classroom experience and mentorship from one of our professional arts instructors. Applicants should have their own mode of transportation (or be willing to carpool or bus), and could be asked to teach in various schools throughout the Bellingham School District. The AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teaches students the skills and behaviors necessary for academic success in high school, college and beyond.  The program targets 6th-12th grade students from the academic middle who are determined to succeed but may require some academic support. AVID students are generally first generation college bound and underrepresented on college campuses.  Shuksan and Whatcom Middle School seek AVID tutors for this quarter. 

AVID tutors work with small groups of middle or high school students under the supervision of a teacher in an AVID classroom during the school day. Tutors serve as guides and facilitators of students’ learning through questioning, writing, critical thinking, and discussion.  This is a nationally recognized program with proven results and offered at all BPS middle and high schools. Can you help ready our students? Training and ongoing support provided. 

AVID volunteers commit to a minimum of one- two hour class weekly.

Support Bellingham Public Schools promise to help each student succeed by volunteering in one of the high schools' after-school tutoring/learning centers. 

Tutors work 1:1 or in small group of students with homework, test review and prep.  The centers meet  after-school at all high schools Monday through Thursday 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tutors needed in all subject areas but math and science expertise are in high demand. Squalicum and Sehome High Schools are currently seeking tutors in-person.  

One shift per week can impact student achievement.

This group reviews the budget and financial projections as well as supports conversations around financial planning, investing, and staff changes. This group supports with writing and editing grants, and occasionally other writing projects, when needed. Our team reaches out via email to this group to ask for help about 1-2 times per quarter, and we have video check-ins 3 times a year. Welcome Volunteers!  We are looking for kind/compassionate/friendly volunteers who can help in our dining room.  

Our wonderful senior center is serving lunch in our dining room Monday-Friday for our local seniors age 60+.  

Our delicious lunch is powered by amazing volunteers like you!  

We are looking for volunteers who can serve drinks, set-up tables, buss tables, wrap silverware, clean-up after lunch, etc... Shifts are typically 10:45-1:15pm M-F.  If you are available either one day per week OR as a sub occasionally, either would be greatly appreciated. And you could make a huge difference for the seniors in our center. 

We are looking for helpers this week (on Thursday and Friday) since many of our volunteers are out of town for the holiday.

Join Us and Be a Bright Spot in Someone’s Day!!

Seeking volunteers to staff a non-profit Lions Club Eye clinic providing free care to low income uninsured individuals one Thursday afternoon a month.

The Haskell Lions Eye Clinic is seeking volunteer opticians to staff the non-profit clinic the 2nd and 4th Thursday afternoons of each month.  There are rotating opticians so it is not necessary to work every clinic day.

World Relief matches newly-arrived refugees with American Host Homes that can assist the family in learning English, adjusting to American culture, and preparing them for self-sufficiency.

Make a difference in the refugee and immigrant community by volunteering to help drive routes for English classes and other appointments as needed using one of our World Relief fleet vehicles. You will be helping provide a much needed resource for clients as they integrate here.

Learn about the cultural adjustment process firsthand and expand your worldview by getting to know a refugee or immigrant family through a supportive friendship focused on cultural awareness alongside practical help navigating life in America.

Our Grocery Rescue Program helps us rescue almost 700,000 lbs. of food from going into landfills each year. We pick up food form local grocery stores and either redistribute it to the community, donate it to local livestock farmers, or compost it. We are currently in need of a Friday volunteer in this department.

This position is a Grocery Rescue Assistance on Fridays from 8-11 AM. This position would aid our Grocery Rescue Drivers in picking up donated food and getting it back to the food bank for distribution. It requires the ability to lift 25-50 lbs. from the ground and includes frequent standing and movement.  It also requires knowing or being willing to learn how to safely operate a lift gate and potentially a pallet jack. We are looking for one person to cover. This is a weekly need and consistency for this position is key.

Make.Shift is a non-profit art space. Our mission is to provide all-ages spaces for art and music in Whatcom and Skagit Counties.

Street Medicine is looking for a few more doctors and nurses to sustain and increase our services.  We are team of volunteer doctors and nurses who provide empathy based medical care for our unhoused neighbors.  We send teams or 4 to 5 to the streets and camps to perform basic wound care, first aid, and consultation.  We are members of the Medical Reserve Corps.
