When an overwhelming disaster strikes Whatcom County, we all know what’s going to happen: hundreds of us will show up the next morning to help out in any way we can. That’s just what we do.

In an effort to organize all the help that shows up, the Volunteer Center will staff a Volunteer Mobilization Center (VMC) that checks in, and assigns volunteers based on the need. Think of this as organizing the chaos. Consider joining this team by volunteering at the VMC when a disaster strikes.

The Volunteer Mobilization Center (VMC) is part of the Whatcom County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan maintained by Whatcom County Sheriff's Office - Division of Emergency Management (WCSO-DEM). The VMC Committee has scheduled an orientation meeting for new recruits. Committee members and existing VMC volunteers will be on hand to explain the organization’s purpose, scope and work completed to date. Representatives on the panel will discuss the four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER - Dr. Rebekah Paci-Green

Dr. Paci-Green will be speaking about the types of damages Whatcom County residents can expect here from a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and tsunami — the proverbial Big One — and the policy, mitigation, and preparedness actions we can take to reduce damages and protect vulnerable members of our community. Dr. Paci-Green is Director of the Resilience Institute at Western Washington University. Dr. Paci-Green has extensive experience in community recovery plans and disaster risk reduction.  Her profile can be found at:  https://huxley.wwu.edu/people/greenr21

Panel speakers include:

City of Bellingham Emergency Management
Whatcom County Sheriff's Office-Dept. of Emergency Management
Whatcom County CERT Program
American Red Cross
Map My Neighborhood,
Volunteer Mobilization Center and more.
